Principal's Message
Dear Cortez Elementary Families:
Welcome to the 2025–26 school year! At Cortez, our highest priorities continue to be the safety, emotional well-being, and academic success of every student. We are excited to continue partnering with you to make this another great year.
This year, our District’s theme is “Thrive.” To thrive means more than just getting by, it means growing, connecting, and finding purpose. As principal, I thrive when I am able to support our school community in ways that positively impact student learning and well-being.
I am honored to work alongside a dedicated team of educators, staff, and volunteers who share a commitment to student learning and well-being. I encourage every family to take part in the life of our school. Your involvement not only helps your child thrive, it strengthens our entire community. Whether it’s connecting with your child’s teacher, serving on the School Site Council or ELAC, joining the PBIS Committee, volunteering with the PFA or Art Pals, or even coaching an after-school sport, your time makes a difference.
Please stay informed by reading our weekly messages, usually sent on Sunday afternoons. These updates include important reminders and ways to stay connected throughout the year.
Finally, daily attendance is key to student success. Please help your child start each day strong by arriving at school on time. When possible, schedule appointments on minimum days or after school to minimize missed learning time.
I look forward to a year filled with growth, collaboration, and meaningful connections. Don’t hesitate to reach out – I would love to schedule time to talk or hear your ideas.
Warmly,
Dr. Matthews, Principal
