Assistant Principal's Message
Welcome to the 2026–2027 School Year!
Dear Cortez Families,
Welcome to another exciting school year at Alicia Cortez Elementary! It is truly an honor to continue serving our incredible Cortez Cougar community as your Assistant Principal. I am excited to partner with our students, families, and staff as we work together to ensure that every child is known, supported, challenged, and celebrated.
As we begin this new year, our shared focus remains clear: improving outcomes for all students by supporting the whole child. Academic achievement is at the heart of our work, but we also recognize that students thrive when they feel safe, connected, valued, and supported socially and emotionally. By working together, we can create learning experiences that inspire curiosity, build confidence, and prepare every student for future success.
I have been an educator for more than 17 years, serving students and families in both Georgia, my home state, and Southern California, where my family and I have proudly called home for the past eight years. Throughout my career, I have served as a special education teacher, special education administrator, and educational leader, experiences that have strengthened my belief that every child has unique strengths and deserves access to high-quality instruction, meaningful relationships, and opportunities to succeed.
As both an educator and a mom, I understand the trust families place in us each day. I believe that strong school-family partnerships are essential to student success, and I am committed to building relationships grounded in open communication, collaboration, and mutual respect. I look forward to greeting many of you each morning during drop-off and getting to know your family throughout the school year.
I am also currently pursuing my Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Special Education Leadership. My research focuses on supporting families of young adults with intellectual disabilities as they navigate the transition from high school to inclusive postsecondary education programs that provide meaningful access to college experiences and opportunities for lifelong success. This work continues to shape my passion for educational equity, inclusion, and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.
At Cortez, we believe that every student can achieve at high levels when schools and families work together with a shared commitment to excellence. I am grateful to be part of a school community that values collaboration, kindness, perseverance, and a relentless focus on student success.
Thank you for entrusting us with your children each day. I look forward to partnering with you throughout the 2026–2027 school year as we make it a year filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable accomplishments.
Welcome back, Cougars!
Warmly,
Erin Starks, M.Ed.
